A Truly Canadian Interview
Q: As a Canadian author how is your work met in other countries? In other words, do you write with a distinct Canadian attitude?
A: As far as I know, most of my readers are from America. Perhaps that is because I write for the Fable Farm series which is published in the states. I think my work, especially the scary stories for kids, are universal. If you can read English you’re set! As for a distinctive Canadian voice…you would need to define that for me. The stereotypical representation of Canada is surviving and adapting to the wilderness. I would love to write a wilderness adventure but, once again, I’d try to make it universal.
Q: What Canadian author has inspired you the most?
A: I’ve met many authors (I love book readings/singings!) but I can’t say one inspired me more than the other. I think it is great whenever someone makes a dream come true. That kind of dedication is always admirable.
Q: How would you define the state of Canadian literature?
A: Between my career and university I have absolutely no time for recreational reading. Therefore, I can’t offer you an informed answer. I will say, however, that Canadian publishers specialize in literary works. Although I see my work as having some literary merit, it’s much more mainstream.
Q: You have been referred to by fans as Canada’s RL Stine. How does that make you feel?
A: Have I really? Since Stine was a best-selling author, I’m honoured!
Q: What is your opinion on the Canadian entertainment scene?
A: I think Canada has amazing talent both on-screen and off-screen. I’d like to see a bit more diversity in terms of the screenwriting. There are not enough Canadian agents willing to take a chance on young, fresh talent. Thus, I have found myself seeking representation in America.
