I stand here in front of you today to address you, the people who we have elected to run our country and the people who have sworn to keep our family safe and to keep our children safe, about a serious social matter that you have been turning a blind eye on and you have been letting the grass grow under your feet. We are angry that you have become a government that let the sleeping dogs lie. Well we say no more, this has to stop, it is time you change your behaviours and your policies and make our communities and our streets safe, where our children and our ground children and their children can freely play games on out doors without the fear of being shot dead with modified replica guns that can fire real bullets. Therefore, I would like to explain the degree of this problem and hearten you to support the solution that I will propose to this issue.
Yesteryear, a 29 years old traffic warden Derek Bennett was shot dead by the police in Brixton and was later discovered that Derek Bennett was carrying a replica gun cigarette lighter. Yesterday, the use of replica weapons were just “fashion accessories” worn by young men whom are members of urban gangs across the country and as a means of intimidations and as means of carrying out street robberies. Today, replica weapons have advanced over-night from just “fashion accessories” to firing real bullets that have been costing lives and have been representing a clear danger to the general public and to the police.
Since this morning urban gangs have learned how to modify replica guns which would then fire real bullets which would then pose a serious threat to our lives. How many people are killed with replica guns compared with the real thing?
• In 2004 numbers of death caused by firearms stand 70 – 20% of that were with modified replica guns.
Producing such a law with teeth, not only would it bite criminals hard, who use life-like weapons as means of intimidations, but they would also bite even harder the replica industry who make billions of pounds a year and who, since this morning when criminal figured out how to modify replica guns to fire real bullets, have seen their sales of replica guns soared through the roof. The ban on life-like weapons would be hugely beneficial to the police, because 72% of the firearms used are replica weapons which can cause real difficulties to the police who have to decide, in a extremely pressured situation, if these weapons are real or not.
Ban on such life-like weapons are already in place in other countries such as France and Belgium. These countries obviously know the danger it represents to the public and to the police; for the reason that, replica guns can be bought over the counter for as little as £65 and can be modified to fire real ammunitions. If a ban on replica guns is good enough for them then why should it not be good enough for us? Replica guns kill people and leave families and communities devastated.
I stand here in front of you today to plead for you to produce a law which ban the continuing manufacture, which ban the importations, which ban the sales and which ban the use of replica guns. Their current availabilities on the open marker, that can be bought for as little as £65, that can be upgraded to fire real bullets, has become popular among urban gangs in this country, who cannot afford the real thing. Furthermore, the varieties of people whom are currently affected by these are broader then just victims they include families, communities as well as police officers. Banning replica guns means decreasing the overall presence of firearms in our country which means assisting the police in tackling those who are armed with intent to cause fear and harm which means decrease of gun related deaths which means no more lives are wasted. Please ban replica guns as they kill people!
